Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I carry the alert without installing a phone app?
Yes. The included pager beeps and flashes when the selected target is reached. Actual temperature numbers remain on the main local display, not on the pager.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I carry a temperature-number display into another room?
Not with this documented kit. Its pager provides status lights and alerts; it has no temperature screen. Choose a receiver with an actual readout for that requirement.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the 600°Fcord claim permit the whole probe setup in a 550°Fcooker?
No. The same manual explicitly limits the cooking environment to 450°F. A cord-only heat rating cannot override that whole-probe restriction.
Explore this need in the finder →Carry the alert rather than the temperature display
The AcuRite 03168 has a useful distinction that is easy to miss in a wireless-thermometer title. Its included pager can sound and flash when the selected food temperature is reached, but it does not show a temperature number. The actual reading remains on the main display beside the cooker. Choose this arrangement if being notified elsewhere is enough; choose a different receiver if you want to keep watching the number while you walk away.
The food probe itself is still cabled. It connects to the local unit while the pager receives the alert by radio. This is not a completely wire-free food probe, and it is not an app-based internet system. The documented kit follows one food location at a time.
A local target with a separate alert route
The main unit lets you select a desired temperature and see the current reading. It can also sound its own alert. With the pager switched on and a working link established, the same target event produces lights and sound on the pager. That can be useful if you are preparing another part of the meal nearby and do not need a live graph or phone notification.
Check the pager's connection indicator before cooking. A radio connection needs to work in the actual places where you will use the equipment. Walls, other electronics and the construction of your home can affect it. A maximum-distance claim should not be treated as a promise that every room will receive the signal reliably.
One probe does not monitor the whole meal
The supplied food probe follows its insertion point. Put it in the relevant interior of the food, clear of bone, gristle, the pan or a poultry cavity. Watching that reading rise can reduce unnecessary door opening, but it does not prove the same temperature at another part of the food or in a second dish.
If you need two continuous food readings, compare a documented two-probe system such as the ThermoPro TP-20. That receiver also has a numerical display to carry. If you only need occasional checks in other locations, a separate handheld thermometer may complement the 03168 without changing the monitor already in place.
The whole-probe heat limit is lower than the cord headline
The original AcuRite manual gives a 600°Fheat-resistant cord figure, but it also explicitly limits the cooking environment to 450°Fbecause of the probe. Those statements must be read together. The larger cable number is not permission to put the entire arrangement in a hotter cooker.
The food-reading range is another separate specification:32°F–392°F. Keep the local display away from hot surfaces, route the cable clear of flames and flare-ups, and avoid crushing it under the lid or door. A suitable location for the display should stay suitable when you open the cooker or move the pan.
An older documented kit to maintain carefully
This review follows AcuRite's archived 03168 instructions. The model-family page still provides a reference to the manual, but that does not establish current stock or prove every later package is physically identical. Check the exact unit, supplied probe and instructions if you are replacing a part or comparing a listing.
The main display needs two AA batteries and the pager needs two AAA cells, so check both units rather than only the larger screen. Clean the probe and display as instructed, keep the connections dry and avoid dishwasher cleaning or immersion. Choose the 03168 for one local food reading with an alert you can carry. Choose another type if live remote numbers, multiple foods, a high-heat cooker beyond its documented limit or a cable-free rotating probe are essential.
