9847NIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

Cooks who need an attended Fahrenheit or Celsius check and want to hold a reading before withdrawing the stem.

The main tradeoff

This verified 9847 N is not a proven identity match for the historical unsuffixed 9847 listing, and cannot stay in the oven.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I hold the number before taking the thermometer out?

Yes. The 9847 N instruction card documents a hold button. First allow the food reading to stabilize, then hold it for viewing away from the food.

Can I leave it in a roast in the oven?

No. The exact instruction card says it is not for oven use and must not be left in food during cooking. Choose a documented leave-in model for that task.

Does its waterproof description permit a dishwasher cycle?

No. Taylor explicitly requires hand washing and excludes immersion and dishwasher cleaning. The written care restriction controls the cleaning routine.

A pocket check with a useful hold button

The Taylor 9847N is a local digital food thermometer for checking a temperature while you are present. Its hold function is the feature to consider first if you regularly have trouble seeing a display at the food. Once the reading has settled, you can hold that number and withdraw the stem to look at it more comfortably.

This is the documented 9847N model. An older listing simply labeled 9847 is not enough to establish that every version has identical construction or instructions. Check the actual suffix when comparing a replacement. The advice here follows Taylor's 9847N card, rather than combining details from products with similar numbers.

Use the stem, then remove it

Taylor instructs the user to insert the stem at least one inch into the food. That is a placement instruction, not a statement that the entire probe is only one inch long. Choose a position that measures the food you want to assess, and avoid treating contact with a tray or another surface as an internal reading.

The hold function is most useful after the measurement has settled. Pressing it too early captures an intermediate value; looking at a held reading later does not mean the thermometer is still reporting the food's current temperature. This distinction is easy to overlook when a display looks perfectly steady because hold is engaged.

The scale is broader than a roast-only dial

The stated range is −40°F to 450°F, with Fahrenheit and Celsius operation. This makes the instrument a different proposition from a narrow meat-doneness dial. It can display temperatures outside the small band commonly printed on roast thermometers, provided the actual use follows the instructions and the food can be probed appropriately.

A broad measuring scale is not a heat rating for the whole thermometer. Taylor explicitly says the 9847N is not for oven use and must not be left in food while cooking. It belongs in your hand for a spot check, followed by removal. Do not try to turn the upper measuring endpoint into permission to put the plastic display in a hot oven.

Cleaning is less permissive than the headline suggests

The maker's product page uses a waterproof description, but the written care instructions still call for hand washing and exclude immersion and dishwasher cleaning. Those specific instructions are what matter when deciding how to clean the tool after use. A water-related marketing term does not make every cleaning process interchangeable.

The distinction affects daily convenience. If your preferred routine is to put the entire utensil into the dishwasher, this is not a documented match. If you are comfortable cleaning the stem by hand and protecting the display and battery area, the care routine may be acceptable. Choose deliberately rather than discovering the restriction after purchase.

A replaceable cell instead of a charging system

The 9847N uses an LR44 button cell. It does not require a phone, wireless receiver or charging dock for its normal reading. Keep the battery compartment closed as instructed and replace the cell with the specified type when required. A simple power arrangement still needs an actual working battery; this is not a passive dial.

Its storage sleeve is useful for putting a pointed instrument away, but a cover is not a guarantee that a dirty probe is ready for storage. Clean and dry the thermometer according to the instructions before packing it into a drawer or a cooking kit.

Who should choose it

The 9847N fits an attended spot-check routine where switchable units and a held reading are more useful than remote alerts. Compare the Lavatools PT09 if you want another fixed-stem digital approach, checking their different care instructions and controls. If your need is an oven reading that continues while you do another task, move to a genuine leave-in thermometer. The 9847N is most useful when chosen for what you will actually do with it: insert, wait, read and remove.
